Olomouc - Czech Republic
About Olomouc
Olomouc is one of the most historically significant and architecturally striking cities in the Czech Republic, situated along the Morava River in the heart of Moravia. With approximately 100,000 residents, it is the country's fifth-largest city and home to one of Central Europe's oldest universities — Palacký University, founded in 1573. The city's historic center, the largest preservation zone outside Prague, is a UNESCO-recognized landmark featuring the Holy Trinity Column, an exceptional example of Baroque artistic expression inscribed in 2000. Olomouc is a genuine university city, rich in cultural activity, festivals, and student life — qualities that resonate directly with Gainesville.
A notable connection between the two communities is the sister school relationship between Gymnázium Olomouc-Hejčín — one of the largest and most prestigious secondary schools in the Czech Republic — and Trilogy school in Gainesville.
History
The Gainesville-Olomouc partnership emerged organically from the grassroots educational connection between Trilogy School in Gainesville and Gymnázium Olomouc-Hejčín. Recognizing the value of this sister-school relationship and the broader civic parallels between the two university-anchored cities, GGIC President Lauren Poe and local educators began discussions to elevate the connection to a municipal level.
The relationship was officially established as a Friendship City in late 2025. Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward and Olomouc Mayor Miroslav Žbánek signed a Memorandum of Understanding via a virtual ceremony, formalizing a mutual commitment to educational collaboration, youth development, and cultural exchange. This agreement laid the groundwork for the inaugural December 2025 student exchange and serves as a foundational step toward exploring a full Sister City designation.

Exchanges
The first official exchange was between the Gymnázium Olomouc-Hejčín — one of the largest and most prestigious secondary schools in the Czech Republic — and Trilogy school in Gainesville. The students from the two schools formed small working groups to research and report findings in ten areas of teen health. The exchange took place between December 2025 and May 2026.
