About Yopal

Yopal is the capital of the Casanare Department in the eastern Llanos region of Colombia, situated at the foothills of the Andes where the mountains give way to vast plains. With a population of approximately 170,000, Yopal serves as an economic and administrative center for Casanare, a department known for its oil production, cattle ranching, and ecological richness — including portions of the biodiverse Colombian Llanos. The city has experienced significant growth in recent decades and is home to a developing university sector and public institutions invested in regional advancement.

Exchanges

A member of the Yopal City Council visited Gainesville in 2025 and met with Commissioner Bryan Eastman and former Mayor Lauren Poe to establish priorities and a path forward with the partnership.

History

This partnership is still in the exploratory stage, but is progressing well. Initiated by Commissioner Bryan Eastman and Jolanda Castillo-Baron, a native of Yopal, this program hopes to exchange best practices in the areas of public safety, tourism and public services, as well as cultural and educational exchanges. GGIC is also working with UF student group PorColombia to help guide the program
